This class is appropriate for all families with a little one on the way. If you are giving birth we strongly recommend that you complete your prenatal education no later than your 36th week of pregnancy. Starting this course between weeks 28-32 will allow you time to comfortably integrate the content into your birth preparation and further explore topics that spark your interest.

Note: Many classes fill up quickly! If you would like to take our Childbirth Prep 6 Week Series you may need to begin prior to 28 weeks.

  • Class Description

    Newborn Care & Parenting is designed for parents-to-be needing practical information on caring for your newborn. This workshop will increase your confidence through the transition to parenthood and incorporates direct instruction paired with hands-on practice.

    The focus of the class is the first 1-2 months of your baby’s life outside of the womb. You’ll learn how to adjust to being a parent and take care of yourself at the same time. Newborn appearance and clinical procedures will be summarized. Methods for swaddling, diapering and soothing newborns will be demonstrated and practiced.

    Please Note:

    -Content covered in these sessions is included in the Details section below.
    -We recommend taking Breast/Chest Feeding Class prior to this class if you plan to nurse your baby as this topic will NOT be discussed at length.
    -Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably as you will be on the floor for the hands-on portion of the class.
    -There will be a break for lunch, but you are encouraged to bring something for lunch as there may not be enough time to order and pick up food.
    -The registration fee includes a birth partner/support person.

     

    IMPORTANT IN-PERSON POLICY: If health and safety concerns warrant it (uptick in COVID-19 infection, poor air quality due to wild fires, etc) all in-person classes may be moved to a virtual format. Refunds and rescheduling, would not be offered in these circumstances. By signing up for in-person classes you are agreeing to this stipulation.     The goal of this class is to make you feel better prepared to take care of your little one especially when you have not have much exposure to newborns in the past.

    Nile Nash MSN, RN, WHNP-BC, CNM is a mama of two little boys and currently offers postpartum midwifery care packages and sleep consultations. Nile is also a certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician through Safe Kids Worldwide and will renew her certification every two years. Nile's technician number is SKID #T839019. Her practice, Mama Lion, was born in 2005 when she started out as a DONA Doula and Birthing From Within Mentor before attending UCSF’s MEPN Master’s program from 2007-2010 to become a nurse midwife. Mama Lion Midwifery thrived in San Francisco for 9 years in the beautiful community of homebirth midwives in the Bay Area. The last few years have been consumed by birthing and raising two little ones during the pandemic and tending to her family. The newest chapter of her calling as a midwife has focused Nile’s professional role on the fourth trimester postpartum period. Mama Lion now cares for families who birth in the hospital but have the wisdom to set up a postpartum plan. Nile is thrilled to be working with the Natural Resources family as the newest facilitator of the New Mothers Circle and the Pregnant Together Circle. www.mamalion.org.

    Lauren Miller Brown is a San Francisco Bay Area native who specializes in providing nurturing, connective, therapeutic massage, doula services and childbirth education classes. She has been a birth doula for since 2007 and feel very fortunate that she is so passionate about her work and that she found it at such a young age. Her work continues to inspire her to this day and she can't imagine doing anything else.

    Lauren's road to birth work began after taking a Doulas of North America training in 2007. After completing her Doula certification she enrolled in Alive and Well! The Institute of Conscious Bodywork in Marin County. Lauren completed her massage training in 2008 and has been working as a bodyworker ever since. After massage school, Lauren worked as a massage therapist at The Mindful Body in San Francisco from 2009-2015, focusing on prenatal massage in particular, as well as with a wide variety of clients, including athletes, yogis, and San Francisco's tech community.

    Mikka Bonel is the founder of Birthing Yoga and Holistic Healing. She has over 1,000 hours of training in yoga, bodywork and birth-work. Mikka is a prenatal and postnatal educator, yoga instructor, bodyworker, 1:1 Yoga/Life coach, Ayurvedic postpartum doula and Somatic Trauma coach.

    Mikka's main teachers/mentors: Jane Austin (pre/postnatal yoga guru), Harvey Deutch (Yoga Therapuetics), Leslie Howard (Pelvic Floor yoga) and Jenna Furnari (Bodywork and postpartum doula) br>

    Mikka is devoted to welcoming your body, heart and soul into this massive transitional period so that you feel held, capable and STRONG. She believes in strength in softness and trusting the deeper wisdom we all have to make the best choices for ourselves and our babies. She radically advocates for self love and connection being the most important ingredients for thriving during one of the most difficult transitions for your life. Mikka radically advocates for education around the first year of postpartum as our society doesn't talk about such things! Consequently many birth humans feel alone, in pain and massively overwhelmed in their first months postpartum. Mikka is here to say, "Hell no!" It does NOT have to be that way.

Lauren could not have been a better instructor. The check in process was easy, quick and straight forward. The class content covered all the essentials and allowed time for plenty of questions. The classroom space was airy and clean. Classroom materials were clean and felt good.We thought that Lauren was a fantastic instructor all around and made this class a truly enjoyable experience.
